FEAT

FEAT

Not since the soundtrack to 1993’s Judgment Night have indie rock and hip-hop blended so well. Steve Reidell (STV SLV) and Aaron Brink (ABX) bonded in the band May or May Not before branching off to form a mash-mixing project that yielded more than two dozen mixtapes. Knowing that licensing a legitimate version of this for their debut album would be impossible, STV SLV and ABX cleverly blended their own production with guest appearances from their favorite artists to create the impressive 2012 studio recording FEAT. “Critical Captions” opens with Elizabeth Harper of Class Actress contrasting her airy vocals with rapper Cadence Weapon’s muscled rhymes. Underneath their call-and-response voices, The Hood Internet layers skittering beats mixed with deliberately glitchy textures. The following “One for the Record Books” is an equally interesting exercise in diametric juxtaposition, as The New Pornographers’ AC Newman shares the mic with the rhyming Jedi Sims (of The Doomtree Collective) over a drum and bass foundation. The outstanding cut “Nothing Should Be a Surprise” builds tension as Isaiah Toothtaker and Show You Suck swap verses.
