Time and Time Again

Time and Time Again

The Cookers are an electrifying ensemble of seven legendary jazz veterans with unmistakable chemistry: trumpeters Eddie Henderson and David Weiss, pianist George Cables, bassist Cecil McBee, drummer Billy Hart, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, and tenor saxophonist Billy Harper. Their fourth full-length, Time and Time Again, is filled with peerless musicianship that’s both elegant and incandescent. The opener, “Sir Galahad,” is a thunderous rerecording of Harper’s 1973 classic, while “Double or Nothing” teems with remarkable interplay and a series of thrilling trumpet solos. Elsewhere, the nocturnal movements of the late highlight “Dance of the Invisible Nymph” are haunting in their restraint.
