“If ‘I Am’ was the only song that someone ever heard from me, I would just want them to feel my vulnerability,” Indiana-hailing DJ and producer Jlin says. “I Am” was composed as a part of Apple Music’s Freedom Songs 2022, an exclusive collection of covers and originals celebrating Juneteenth. “It’s a percussion conversation,” she says. “In African culture, drums are a form of communication. They were before and after colonization, so I just wanted to hone in on that and just have a conversation with percussion.”
