Born in Poland, raised in Tel Aviv, and sprung into musical action in the early '80s in Amsterdam with Minimal Compact, Malka Spigel has quite the nuanced resume. Married to Wire's Colin Newman, she has collaborated with him on numerous projects and has added a heavy list of guests to this captivating and subliminal pop release. Johnny Marr, Andy Ramsay, film composer Teho Teardo, and Matthew Simms are among those helping shift the sounds. Spigel's alluring (and often processed) vocals add a twist to the dreampop of "Ammonite" and the title track, as well as to the post-punk growl of "See It Sideways," where Sonic Youth–type tonal clusters are met with bursts of pure melody. Everyday is a difficult album to pigeonhole, taking cues from '80s synth music, '90s shoegaze, and an unusual mix of lo-fi recording techniques brought into sterling high fidelity. "Dream Time" throws together a hypnotic groove that evokes its title with unnerving accuracy. "Finding You" turns classical minimalism into a gooey confection. (Spigel also continues to perform with husband Newman and Robin Rimbaud as Githead.)
