The Berlin-based British artist Perera Elsewhere could hardly be more appropriately named. She sounds like she's elsewhere, when she is, actually, very much here. She’s an otherworldly apparition who seeps into your soul as songs like “Drunk Man” ripple outward in slow motion: like oil on water, an insidious, beautiful force of physics. Elsewhere’s voice is smoldering, languid, caught somewhere between the sexy dusk of Dusty Springfield and the 3 a.m. intimacy of a confessional Cat Power. The music is spare; from woodwinds to shakers and guitars, every component is restrained, filtered to its essence. Her collaborations are magical. The spooky SoCal musician Gonjasufi appears on the haunting and hypnotic “Giddy,“ and German cellist/electronic artist Springitgut flavors the ultra-sultry “Shady.” One can’t help but think of the groundbreaking, mesmerizing work of Portishead on songs like the noir-soaked “Bizarre,” and even the woozy, chanting “Ebora” (featuring Yoruban vocalist Aremu). Everlast breathes with a sensual, worldly desire and sophistication; it's one of 2013's most intoxicating releases.
