Countrypolitan Favorites

This goodtime North Carolina-based group liberally blends the roots of country, rockabilly, surf, blues and kitsch culture until it’s one big party anthem where everyone’s invited to sing along. This collection of crossover country hits is given a rawboned delivery that makes “(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden” as urgent and savage as “Wolverton Mountain” and “Oh Lonesome Me.” And it isn’t just country tunes recast here. T. Rex’s “Life’s A Gas,” the Byrds’ “Have You Seen Her Face“ and Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Tombstone Shadow” are twisted through the SCOTS retro-processor and driven through the swamp of hyperactive rhythms and extra-skrotched guitars. The groove never relents and the guitars are recorded with maximum presence. They’ve remained playful and irreverent but never skewer a song to the point of ironic parody, despite the band’s tongue-in-cheek non de plume. SCOTS play with contagious, infectious enthusiasm.
