Laura Nyro’s stunning second album contains some of her best-known songs, later covered by other artists. “Eli’s Comin’”—a 1969 hit for Three Dog Night—opens with spooky organ and intimate crooning and then explodes into ebullient soul pop fueled by whooping brass and Nyro’s sprightly piano. The 5th Dimension took “Sweet Blindness” and “Stoned Soul Picnic” up, up, and away, but Nyro’s original versions are a revelation, driven by sashaying rhythms, splashing tambourine, pealing bah-bah-bahs, sensual lyrics, and her joyously untethered vocals.
