Early Hours (DJ Mix)

“This is a first-thing-in-the-morning kind of listen,” Panda Bear (aka Noah Lennox) tells Apple Music about his Early Hours DJ mix, a contemplative, pastel-hued collection of current inspirations. It’s a broad canvas of colors and textures, sounds and eras that could only make sense together under his thoughtful artistic guidance: There’s Nina Simone’s regal cover of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released”; sweeping, sparkling meditations from Ethiopian jazz pianist Hailu Mergia (“Yefikir Engurguro”); and a wide-eyed soliloquy from New Age icon Laraaji (“I Can Only Bliss Out [F’Days]”). The 1972 bossa nova classic “Águas De Março” by Tom Jobim and Elis Regina is a personal favorite, he says. “I really like how you can hear them getting loose toward the end—you can hear her laughing a little bit. I love that.” Panda Bear, who is best known as a member of the band Animal Collective, now lives in Lisbon, Portugal, where he has befriended fellow musician Maria Reis. Her shoegaze-y, psychedelic cut “Picada de Vespa” is included here. “I was lucky enough to record some of her music a while back,” he says. “She’s one of my favorite things going at the moment.”
