Early Hours (DJ Mix)

For Montreal producer Jacques Greene, “early hours” could mean a couple different things—the final tingly moments of a hazy night out, or a coffee on the way to the airport. He leaned toward the latter for his contribution to our Early Hours DJ mix series. “It grew into the kind of mix that I’d personally gravitate towards if I had an early flight,” he tells Apple Music, “when the chaos around you needs to be muted and controlled with noise-canceling headphones and your hoodie up.” It features many of Greene’s favorite chill-out tracks, like ambient turns from Skee Mask (“Verdigris”) and droning, looping techno from Shinichi Atobe (“The Red Line”). “I wanted this set to have a sense of push and pull, of sections,” he says, noting that Coby Sey’s cover of Seal’s "Kiss From a Rose" serves as a "mental breather." Lead track "5: 00 Am Fountain," a highlight from Danish producer Croatian Amor's new album Remember Rainbow Bridge, is the perfect kick-off to an Early Hours voyage. Says Greene: “Whether you're up all night and walk by the fountain with your friends or pass it on an early morning jog, that's up to you.” Listen to the mix now and read on for his thoughts on a few choice tracks. Charles Webster, “The Spell (Burial Mix)” “This Burial remix is such a delicate, fragile piece of music, it sounds like it might break if you listen to it too loud. The pulse of the kick drum is almost just a suggestion, and there's something incredibly soothing about the textures and melodies throughout that keep visiting and leaving the song like ghosts.” Oh, Yoko, “Seashore (Sprinkles’ Ambient Ballroom)” “A classic remix that I hold dear to my heart. It holds some of the same qualities as Burial’s remix of ‘The Spell,’ in that’s it’s soft, tender, and even soothing, but at its core it’s all angst and activism. The song feels weighted by the entire history of ballroom and queer dance culture. A completely spellbinding and hypnotizing work.” Jacques Greene, “Leave Here (Open Version)” “I wanted to close out the record with an alternative version of ‘Leave Here,’ a track on my latest EP Fantasy. A lot of the music on that record started as ambient sketches and I had gone back and done expanded, or ‘open,’ versions of them as full-on ambient compositions. If there was ever a time to include this unreleased version somewhere, this felt like the right place.”
