Duets: Friends & Legends

Duets: Friends & Legends

Star-studded isn’t too strong a phrase to apply to Anne Murray’s Duets – Friends & Legends album. This 2008 release pairs the much-loved country/pop songstress with an impressively diverse roster of female singing partners and Murray rises to the occasion, revealing some underexposed sides to her familiar vocal persona. When harmonizing with k.d. lang and Martina McBride (on “A Love Song” and “Danny’s Song,” respectively), Murray comes across as regal and serene. Pairings with Shelby Lynn (“You Won’t See Me”) and Nelly Furtado (“Daydream Believer”) allow her to loosen up and get exuberant. Emmylou Harris’ high, keening edge lends fullness to Murray’s rich alto on “Another Pot O’ Tea,” while Sarah Brightman’s cultivated tones transform “Snowbird” into an elegant Victorian aria. Anne shines amidst this mixed company, getting folksy with the Indigo Girls on “A Little Good News” and sharing a moment of pop grandeur with Celine Dion on “When I Fall In Love.” All told, Murray sounds invigorated on Duets, shining brightly among a select galaxy of stellar talent.
