Doctor Faith

Doctor Faith

Christopher Cross’ explosive success at the turn of the ‘80s with his landmark hit, “Sailing” and self-titled debut album has actually worked against the man. He was such an omnipresent figure in music with his soothing ballads that critics turned against him. However, his talent remains and Doctor Faith is a nicely and carefully crafted album with songs just as emotionally true and striking as his early work. His smooth, soulful vocals dominate. “When You Come Home” is an airily arranged piece with easeful acoustic guitars and mild synths providing the perfect backdrop for Cross’ romantic vocals. The album continues on this trajectory. “Dreamers” floats above the clouds. “November” has a somber shade to it, reflecting the passing of time, which is even better observed in “I’m Too Old for This,” where Cross watches what society has become. The title track adds an extra bump to its step. “Poor Man’s Ecstasy” cranks up the amps, CC-style. Cross excels at an adult-contemporary sound that is perfect for fans of New Age and soft rock.
