DJ-Kicks (DJ Mix)

Under his own name, Paul Woolford is a remixer with an unerring crossover instinct—the man responsible for flipping songs from acts like Dua Lipa and Rag’n’Bone Man & P!nk into proper dance-floor fillers. But he’s built a parallel career keeping the underground legacy of breakbeat culture alive under his Special Request alias. Given that project’s immersion in classic jungle, his DJ-Kicks isn’t nearly as full-on as you might expect: He eases listeners in with an extended intro of cosmic jazz, lush NYC garage, and deep house. But halfway in, things take a turn toward techno as the laser zaps of Krystal Klear’s “Tun Valve” clear a path for Speedy J’s classic “De-Orbit” and AceMo’s lush, Detroit-inspired “Sequence of Life.” Only in the final stretch does Woolford open the floodgates for a rush of rolling jungle breaks—and when he does, it’s absolutely glorious, like a 747 lifting off above green, rolling hills against the most majestic orange sunset you’ve ever seen.
