Diesel Made for Two

Diesel Made for Two

The noble tradition of the trucker song gets a wash and a shine on Chris Sprague’s Diesel Made for Two. Veteran roots-rocker Sprague sings with a Buck Owens-ish twang and recalls the sound of 1960s Bakerfield-style country. He tackles just about every aspect of trucker culture here, with plenty of references to CB banter (“That’s a Big 10-4,” “What’s Your 20?”), cross-country loneliness (“Highway Bound”) and 18-wheel romance (“The Cutest Truck Driver,””Diesel Made for Two”). Sprague does his best to add individual nuances to each tune, tossing in dashes of bluegrass, country boogie, and old-time folk. A Johnny Cash-like gravitas creeps into “Overloaded Diesel,” while “Pray for Your Daddy (He’s a Trucker)” has a touch of Merle Haggard blue-collar grit. With exception of the groan-inducing “Let’s Get Drunk and Truck,” Sprague successfully walks the fine line between homage and parody in these tracks. Frank Lee Sprague (Chris’ brother), Deke Dickerson, and Carl Leyland strum, plunk and harmonize along with cheerful nonchalance. Diesel Made for Two is a heartland hoot. Roll on, good buddy.
