Destination Life

Destination Life

Contemporary bluegrass artist Rhonda Vincent keeps her music pure and easy, employing mandolins, banjos, fiddles and whatever else necessary to sketch her tales of love and world-weary struggle. The title track of her 2009 album written by Aotearoa New Zealand artist Donna Dean, Destination Life, and the duet with new band member Ben Helson for “Crazy What a Lonely Heart Will Do” point up the hurt in her flawless country voice. Vincent can stack up the harmonies until it’s simply overwhelming with the help of an ever-eager supporting cast. With her touring band providing its support, there’s a natural musical language being spoken and an energy that pushes “I Can Make Him Whisper I Love You” and the hyper-kinetic banjo-driven “Heart Wrenching Lovesick Memories,” the album’s first single, into an excited realm that retains the music’s tradition while also providing a modern vibrancy. Throw in quick-stepping dance floor ready cuts such as Buck Owens’ “Stop the World (And Let Me Off)” and “Eighth of January” and you’ve got an album that sounds as if it came direct from an ol’ time saloon.
