Snowghost Pieces

Snowghost Pieces

Recorded at Brett Allen’s Montana studio, Snowghost Pieces is a new set of collaborative pieces from three electronic musicians: Germany’s Dieter Moebius (who’s half of the legendary Cluster) and the U.S.’s Tim Story (who’s worked with Roedelius) and Jon Leidecker (whose work includes Negativland and People Like Us, usually under his Wobbly pseudonym). The 11 tracks here are often rooted in hypnotic rhythms and then feature an onslaught of abrupt noises and found sounds that deliberately confuse the outcome. This near-hour of chaos can't be filed under "easy listening," but "difficult listening" might work—though that suggests the music is hostile and without empathy, which clearly isn't true once a track like “Treadmill” works past its opening aggression. The 10-minute “Vex” is the arguable highlight. Its sheer length lets its ideas permeate the subconscious. However, the trio manage to seduce quickly on the melodic “Cut Bank” and the piano-informed, elliptical-minimalism of “Olara.” It’s music not meant to be explained but to be felt.
