Dakar Bamako

Dakar Bamako

Ausecuma Beats have lost none of their trademark jubilance on their third album, despite finishing the record while being divided by geographical boundaries. Named for their bright fusion of music from Australia, Cuba, Mali, and the Senegambia region, the Melbourne ensemble captures the excitement of their live show on Dakar Bamako while continuously integrating new elements. A rallying cry for Mali’s quest for freedom from European influence, the title track features a guest-rapped segment from Senegal’s Queen Dollars. Other tracks showcase the band’s traditional instrumentation—including kora, djembe, talking drums, and the xylophone-esque balafon—alongside electric guitar, bass, and drum kit, with more seamless interplay than ever. Vocalist Boubacar Gaye remains an inviting musical tour guide as more than a dozen players celebrate personal tales of migration and reunion. Case in point: Malian vocalist Mariama Konaté leads the way on “Jeunesse Africaine,” a poignant elegy for generations of African children pressured to relocate overseas for better economic opportunities.
