Coming Alive (Live)
Here, Christian singer/songwriter Dustin Smith takes a widescreen approach to deliver his songs of devotion and praise. Recorded live at Kansas City’s World Revival Church, Coming Alive renders its tracks in bright instrumental colors. Smith’s vocals—clear in tone, with a yearning undercurrent—command the spotlight without taking the focus away from the album’s devotional content. The title track establishes the cinematic sweep of the album with its galloping tempo, blazing guitars, and celebratory lyrics. “Now and Forevermore” and “You Are the Fire” hit equally dramatic peaks, balanced by more contemplative ballads like “We Want to Know You” and “Come Rushing In” (the latter graced by Katie Wormly’s harmony vocals). “He’s Alive”—cowritten with Michael W. Smith, Seth Mosley, and Michael Farren—stands out for its grandly ascending melody and vivid invocation of Christ’s resurrection. From the textured atmospherics of “Home” to the updated hymnody of “Be Exalted (In the Dust),” Smith achieves enough creative diversity to keep the album sonically interesting as well as spiritually uplifting.
