Come Sunday

Come Sunday

Between them, bassist Charlie Haden and pianist Hank Jones have recorded a host of notable duo albums with everyone from guitarists Pat Metheny and Egberto Gismonti to pianists Tommy Flanagan and Keith Jarrett. But together they recorded Steal Away, and that sublime 1995 project of “spirituals, hymns, and folks songs” remains a highlight for both. Fifteen years later, the pair reunited a few months before Jones’ death for its follow-up, Come Sunday. The repertoire’s scope was expanded—there’s a pair of Christmas carols and the Duke Ellington title track. Yet the playing and interaction remain as deeply felt. Haden takes the melody on “Down by the Riverside,” with Jones providing his legendary intuitive accompaniment. “Going Home” is based on the theme from the second movement of Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony and is a textbook example of Jones’ sometimes-overlooked soulfulness.
