Cold World

Cold World

Five years after her Daptone Records debut, septuagenarian gospel singer Naomi Shelton followed up with Cool World, again mixing raw gospel with the kind of vintage '60s-style soul grooves Daptone does so well. But there's a bit more musical variation here. "Movin'" rolls gleefully along with a sort of Sam Cooke stroll; "Bound for the Promised Land" bears the kind of syncopated funk feel found on Honey Cone's 1971 smash "Want Ads"; "I Don't Know" is a simmering pot of soul not far removed from the vibe of a classic Sam & Dave ballad. But all these soulful sounds are set in a spiritual context when Shelton starts testifying in her charismatic, commanding way.
