The fractured rhythmic and timbral landscapes and angular melodies of Mary Halvorson’s music intermingle in new ways with Code Girl, a double album featuring vocalist Amirtha Kidambi, who sings Halvorson’s original lyrics with a determined grace. The set has an appealingly damaged art-song quality, sacrificing nothing in terms of instrumental grit. Halvorson’s off-kilter guitar and effects mesh with the searching virtuoso trumpet of Ambrose Akinmusire, and Halvorson’s mates in Thumbscrew (bassist Michael Formanek, drummer Tomas Fujiwara) have their trenchant say as well.
