Clutch of the Tiger

Clutch of the Tiger

An odd, entertaining, and ultimately dubious mythology surrounds Clutchy Hopkins, a multi-instrumentalist and producer who apparently works in secret and has never been seen. Fueled by the Internet (of course) and a growing cadre of rabid fans, the legend has grown since his first album, The Life of Clutchy Hopkins, was released in 2006. But even if the man and the story are contrived that shouldn’t detract from the actual music, which is superb. In collaboration (via correspondence, naturally) with fellow multi-instrumentalist and soundtrack composer Shawn Lee — who may not be mysterious but is certainly talented — the two have created an album of super-smooth, chilled-out instrumental gems ideal for late-night lounging. Impeccably produced and arranged, they mix organs, pianos, and an excellent rhythm section with guitar, horns, and a load of shimmering samples to produce a delicious blend of mellow funk, downtempo electronica, and soul jazz. As intriguing as the back story may be, it’s no match for the deep grooves that make Clutch of the Tiger nearly irresistible. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
