Close Curtains b/w Unbelievable - EP

A favorite of the hip-hop underground, Detroit emcee Guilty Simpson is probably best known for his excellent 2008 Stones Throw debut, Ode to the Ghetto, but he's also one-third of the group Battle Axe (with Sean Price and Black Milk) and is down with the crew Almighty Dreadnaughtz. A follow-up to last year's O.J. Simpson album, this project (also released on limited-edition 7-inch red vinyl) finds him working with different producers. They hook him up with a more spacy, electronic sound, especially on "Close Curtains," concocted by Ernest Gonzales and NickNack and the Soundfounder remix. "Unbelievable" (produced by Slautah) is closer to the straight boom-bap of Guilty's earlier work, rocking some nice chopped loops and simple drums. We also get two more remixes, most notably the Kone and Fat Albert joint, complete with dusty snares and a likeably sinister low end. This is somewhat of a different direction for Guilty, but luckily for us, his razor-sharp wordplay sounds tight no matter what kind of beat he's on.
