Classical Session: Sean Shibe

Classical Session: Sean Shibe

In his intimate Classical Session, guitarist Sean Shibe performs three pieces, all arranged by his friend and fellow guitarist Forbes Henderson. He begins with two of the late jazz pianist Chick Corea’s Children’s Songs, piano miniatures that aim, in the words of the composer, “to convey simplicity as beauty, as represented in the Spirit of a child.” “I think most people would believe them to be originally written for guitar if they didn’t know otherwise,” Shibe tells Apple Music. “Forbes uses imaginative and really satisfying solutions to problems posed by the originals: harmonics, extended techniques, detailed fingerings, and transpositions. He really breathes new life into them.” For his final track, Shibe turns to the music of another jazz musician, the bassist, singer, and composer Avishai Cohen. “‘Remembering’ is a really lovely little piece,” he says of the number originally scored for jazz trio. “Again, it demonstrates Forbes’ instinct for knowing what kind of material will arrange well.” Shibe invites us to listen out for the campanella (‘little bell’) effect, sustained nearly all the way through, where the bassline overlaps with the upper line—typical of Henderson’s inspired, playful treatment. “There’s actually a gentle playfulness to all of these pieces,” adds Shibe, “which I think is quite sweet.”
