Our Last Night's ability to shift on a dime between melodic pop-rock and bruising metalcore is on full display throughout Selective Hearing. Distressed riffs abruptly break the synthy tranquility of "Free Radicals" and "Ivory Tower," while chaotic, barking vocals add a new dimension to the ’90s-rock-meets-keyboard-pop of "Ghost in the Machine." Even “Tongue Tied”—a falsetto-draped pop-punk banger coated with decadent electronics—is powered by an onslaught of anguished, overdriven guitars.
