American composer Elliott Carter wrote some of his finest works in his final years, and five of them are recorded here for the first time. The stellar lineup includes a BBC Symphony Orchestra in thrilling form on Interventions, with pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard adding virtuosity and finesse—as he does to Dialogues and Dialogues II. 2 Controversies and a Conversation, meanwhile, features a sparkling performance from percussionist Colin Currie. Instances and Epigrams, both written when Carter was 103, possess all the mischief you’d expect from a much younger composer, and they are performed with great humor.
