Megafaun continue their inspired adventures in Americana on their third release. Working mostly with acoustic guitars, dobro, fiddle, banjo, cello, piano, and drums they explore a wide range of ideas and sounds, and their ability to strike a balance between conventional song structures and engaging experimentation is particularly pleasing. Equally impressive is the way in which they sound simultaneously loose and meticulous. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the 12-minute-plus instrumental “Comprovisation for Connor Pass.” As the name implies, it sounds like a free jam that morphed into a composition, and it passes through a labyrinth of ambient soundscapes, solos, and distinct movements without flagging. Not an easy feat. On the other end of the spectrum are the solid folk-rock tunes “Carolina Days,” “Volunteers,” and the title track. Somewhere in between is “Eagle,” which rides a bluesy groove before taking a fascinating detour with wailing sax and electric guitar that changes the form of the song entirely. A gorgeous release by a terrifically talented and imaginative trio capable of taking roots music to new and exciting places.
