Can It Be?

Can It Be?

A Southern rap classic that remains almost entirely overlooked outside of Gangsta Blac’s native Memphis, Can It Be? represents the apex of Three 6 Mafia’s early production technique. Though they would have a severe falling-out following the release of this album, Gangsta Blac was once a crucial member of the Three 6 Mafia clique, with the core production team of DJ Paul and Juicy J lacing the entirety of Blac’s best album with their patented atmospheric production style. At this time, Three 6 Mafia was pioneering a sound that resembled nothing else in hip-hop. Lo-fi and utterly hypnotic, the production style of Can It Be? can decelerate to a sluggish grind, or race upon triple-time hi-hats, but always burns with the intention of making the clique’s Memphis, Tennessee stomping grounds seem like the most otherworldly, frightening place in the world. Gangsta Blac was one of Memphis’ most popular rappers at the time, and though his rapid-fire chanting style can take some getting used to, the blend of elements found on Can It Be? remains unnerving, spellbinding, and wholly original.
