Boy Meets World

Boy Meets World

Boy Meets World is New York drill phenomenon Sleepy Hallow’s first album since emerging from prison, and he takes no chances by dawdling through the album’s runtime; he sounds hungry. Sleepy is the face of the Winners Circle label alongside his running mate Sheff G, who was still incarcerated at the time of Boy Meets World’s release, making the album a bittersweet affair, and that absence is felt. But the rap renegade is more than capable of handling the show all by himself, blending his drill roots with melodic pop-rap, heavy bass-backed introspection, and soul-sample head-nodders. Sleepy invites artists like Doechii, Fivio Foreign, Lil Tjay, and more to join him on Boy, but he’s at his best when he attacks the beat on his own. On “Damn” he shows off a double-time flow, embracing Jersey club drum grooves to highlight his dextrous delivery. Album closer “Purple Heart” finds him turning the lens inward, revealing that all the success, stardom, and money in the world can’t heal the scars he’s accrued on the streets and behind bars. He raps, “They only care about you when you in a coffin/Or when you up in jail,” before offering a tribute to his best friend still locked up: “I hope my bro get bail/I'm screaming, ‘Free my dawgs and RIP who not here.’”
