Funeral Sky

Funeral Sky

Reuben Bullock is the son of a traveling preacher, and one doesn’t have to try hard to hear the influence of pulpit-pounding in Bullocks’ lyrics and arrangements. With brother Distance Bullock on cello and percussion, Reuben and three other members use banjos, horns, guitars, keyboards, and robust choruses in creating subtly moving post-folk, not far from that of acts like My Morning Jacket or Port O’Brien. This Canadian outfit is, fittingly, on the respected Arts & Crafts label, which may account for the occasional evocation of dramatic indie artists like Arcade Fire. Getting swept up in the swirling undertow of Reuben & The Dark is a distinct pleasure, with poetic lyrics and surprisingly soulful goosebump-inducing tunes like “The River” and “Black Water.” (The latter tune feels a bit inspired by Nick Lowe’s current work.) It’s beautiful stuff, and the rock-ier tunes here—like “Can’t See the Light” and “Rolling Stone”—are uplifting and infectious, with big harmonic moments glittering like stars. For more chills and charm, don’t miss the stunner smack in the middle of Funeral Sky, “Marionette."
