Blue Coloured Mountain

Blue Coloured Mountain

After Szymon Borzestowski’s death at age 23, his posthumous 2015 album, Tigersapp, became a deserving word-of-mouth success. His family later recovered seven more tracks, collated as this equally rewarding EP. Blue Coloured Mountain packs plenty of new ideas—and potential new directions—from the Australian multi-instrumentalist and producer. While still as layered and immersive as Tigersapp, the EP swaps out some of the earlier folktronica twang in favor of more overtly electronic bedroom pop. The tangled, inward-pointed hook of opener “Yakuza” evokes the melodic experiments of Gold Panda, while the sprightly instrumental “Anhalt” showcases vintage-sounding drum breaks worthy of Tame Impala. Borzestowski’s work has spread wide since his passing, with his younger brother, Gang of Youths drummer Dom Borzestowski, recreating some of the songs in live settings. What remains most impressive, though, are the vibrant, self-contained microcosms that Szymon achieved all on his own. These serene songs place as much emphasis on taut rhythms and percolating electronics as they do on his airy singing and heartfelt lyrics.
