In honor of Black Music Month 2021, Jersey club producer DJ Sliink has created a special mix. Below, he shares his thoughts on Black music and how its rich legacy comes alive in his work. “Black music means the beginning. A lot of people forget that Black music originated from Black people. Other cultures borrow a lot from Black people. I think over the time, it’s gotten so bad that people forget what’s actually ours that we created. Black music to me means still being strong and innovative when the chances aren’t fair. Black music to me means DJ Sliink! ‘Put Cha Back in It,’ from my first EP, Vibrate—I feel that record alone bridged a gap between club music and electronic music, in which Black people have the biggest hand of all. People really forget who made electronic music—that’s when I had to remind them.”
