Six years after releasing their last studio album, the Dead delivered 1987’s In the Dark, which became a surprise late-career hit, making the band more popular than ever with its polished, well-worn sound. The bluesy "West L.A. Fadeaway" and the amiable, roots-rocking "Touch of Grey" are as warm and folky as anything they've done, featuring some of their most concise and appealing arrangements since the early ‘70s.
