Better Ghosts

Better Ghosts

Mazes are an English trio with a clear fondness for things that both jangle and go whoosh. From power pop to Krautrock, the guys work a smart filtering system that makes genre-mashing seem as effortless as a summer-afternoon nap. Their 2013 LP Ores & Minerals made it clear that boundaries won’t hold them in—though the guitar crash ’n’ strum of 2011’s A Thousand Heys was a pretty great slice of pure indie rock. On Better Ghosts, they dabble in jittery-jangle like a nervy Vulgar Boatmen on “Hayfever Wristband.” They twist and bend guitar notes like Built to Spill on the brawny, circling “Higgs Boson” and the loping “Organ Harvest.” And they paint a spare, abstract vision of insect love on “Cicada.” There are so many reasons to love this collection, with two of the strongest being the hip-shaking motorik groove of “Notes Between from F&E” and the sprawling yet tightly coiled “Sand Grown.” Just having the smarts to cover the awesome and underrated Texan band Yellow Fever in their nod to ‘60s folk-pop guru Donovan should put them at the top of some kind of “best of” list.
