Ready to Fly

Ready to Fly

In 2011, 18-year-old Jamie Grace broke through on Christian radio thanks to her openhearted lyric testimony and breezy, acoustic-centered sound. The Atlanta-based singer/songwriter’s sophomore album, Ready to Fly, keeps her momentum going with more expressions of spiritual wonder and gratitude, along with hints of a greater maturity in the face of life’s sorrows. Grace’s honeyed vocals and insistent guitar strums remain the focus of the music, enhanced by programmed beats courtesy of producer Chuck Butler. The album’s lyrics are positive without being cloying, informed by a spiritual outlook based on Grace’s own experiences. Songs like “Beautiful Day,” “Always You," and “Do Life Big” are airy in feel, yet grounded in solid, faith-based teachings. Whether she’s delivering an esteem-building message to young women (“Every Bit as Lovely”) or offering a purity anthem in tandem with Morgan Harper Nichols (“White Boots”), Grace keeps the rhythms flowing while tackling real-life issues in relatable terms. The title track wraps words of hope around a waltzing tempo powered by a tuba (!).
