Baby Tate Presents - Sexploration: The Musical - EP

Atlanta MC Baby Tate samples styles from rap regions nationwide—take “Jersey,” which pays tribute to the quickly proliferating club scene referenced in the title. Bouncing basslines gallop beneath Tate’s voice as melodic synth chords give the song a smooth feel. Soon enough, the double-time chorus introduces an Amen break, above which Tate sings, “I’m in the middle of New Jersey, cryin’ in the club/Thinkin’ about all the ways you hurt me/You don’t give a fuck.” It’s this blend of honest lyrics and cathartic house beats that has made Tate a pioneer in the dance rap craze. With sex-positive lyrics that have earned Tate comparisons to Nicki Minaj, City Girls, and more, Sexploration: The Musical chronicles the highs, lows, and in-betweens that come alongside relationships of love, lust, and desire. On “Grip,” she plays with the hyphy minimalism that was pioneered in the early-2000s Bay Area and blends it with an interpolation of Ying Yang Twins’ “Wait (The Whisper Song),” adding West Coast flavor to her ATL roots. Elsewhere, “Lollipop” may share a name with the Lil Wayne classic, but Tate’s version is a synth-driven dance track drenched in vocoder vocals and pop melodies. On Sexploration, Baby Tate converses with her idols, but always has the last word.
