On Aviation, Semi-Precious Weapons give glam-rock a 21st-century makeover with the help of in-demand producer Christopher “Tricky” Stewart (of Beyoncé and Rihanna fame). At first blush, it might seem like a dicey proposition for lead singer Justin Tranter and company to step out of their ‘70s-era comfort zone and embrace the sonic trappings of today. But if anything, Semi-Precious Weapons’ brazen, glitter-dipped sound and cheerfully nasty attitude have been cranked up a notch this time out. The grooves slink and swagger with abandon as guitarist Stevy Pyne splashes leering riffs across walls of throbbing synths. Tranter exudes a cheeky, slightly demented charisma as he preens his way through “Look to the Stars,” “Drink,” and “Cherries on Ice.” When the band venture into more contemporary dance-pop territory (as on “Aviation High” and “Young Love”), they manage to keep their trashy spirit intact. Lyrically, dashes of venom add extra bite to tracks like the hard-pumping “Free Booze” and the shimmering “Vegas.” The party anthem “That’s My Friend” is unexpectedly sincere in tone.
