Auto Music

Brian Reitzell is an influential music industry veteran whom few people have heard of. He’s drummed for Redd Kross and Air, but he's mostly worked as a music supervisor and composer for TV and film. Among his greatest achievements was coaxing My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields to contribute to the film Lost in Translation. Auto Music is Reitzell’s foray into an album of his own, and, as the title implies, it’s meant to be listened to while driving on highways where one senses a surreal reality occurring as the world whips past the window. (It’s no surprise that Reitzell lives in Los Angeles.) Kevin Shields plays organ on the hypnotic “Last Summer”; that, along with “Ozu Choral,” makes up the first spaced-out 10 minutes of this experimental album. “Ozu” brings serious rhythms into the mix. For each track, Reitzell screened a different DVD, imagining he was scoring the ‘70s Spanish art film Spirit of the Beehive or the early pre-Fantasia animations of Oskar Fischinger.
