Apple Music Home Session: Sugababes

British pop royalty Sugababes revive their original setup—consisting of Mutya Buena, Siobhán Donaghy, and Keisha Buchanan—for this three-track Apple Music Home Session, a salute to the past, present, and future. Over the years, through breakups, makeups, and lineup changes, the group’s dedication to stirring R&B/soul remains central to their story. A new take on a single penned by all three members for 2022’s eighth studio album The Lost Tapes, “Back in the Day” rides rising harmonies and elements of Ahmad’s 1994 track of the same name. “You can hear all the details in the way that we’re singing—and that’s what it’s all about,” Donaghy says. “Naturally, we just return to our usual harmonies: I take the high [notes], and Keisha adds her deep tone.” The group also delivers a new rendition of “Freak Like Me,” the smash single that became their first UK No. 1 back in 2002, before racing to more recent times with a heartfelt cover of Cameroonian American newcomer Libianca’s single “People.” “We’ve really focused on the percussion and that energy you get from the rhythm of the song,” Donaghy says. “It’s great that we’ve made it our own and also done something outside of our comfort zone,” adds Buchanan.
