All Saints

All Saints

The soulful, spiky and swaggering debut album from Shaznay Lewis, Melanie Blatt and sisters Natalie and Nicole Appleton instantly pitched them as credible Spice Girls rivals. An iconic, quotable opening monologue and gospel-tinged harmonies ensured “Never Ever” became a generation-defining hit, the funky, chopped-up R&B of “I Know Where It’s At” put the band in a far cooler lane than their contemporaries, while “Bootie Call”’s sexually assured bounce remains thrilling. There’s a brash, infectious confidence throughout (see “Alone”s detached doo-wop and the breezy chutzpah showed in their “Under The Bridge” reboot) that deservedly got them to pop’s top table.
