An iconic, quotable opening monologue and gospel-tinged harmonies ensured “Never Ever” became a generation-defining hit, the funky, chopped-up R&B of “I Know Where It’s At” put the band in a far cooler lane than their contemporaries, while “Bootie Call”’s sexually assured bounce remains thrilling. There’s a brash, infectious confidence throughout (see “Alone”s detached doo-wop and the breezy chutzpah showed in their “Under The Bridge” reboot) that deservedly got them to pop’s top table.
