The Prescription (feat. UMO Jazz Orchestra)

Saxophonist Lenny Pickett is only now, at age 60, putting out his second album as a leader, but you can’t say he hasn’t been busy. A onetime member of the famed Tower of Power in its ‘70s heyday and a Saturday Night Live band member since 1985 (and its musical director since 1995), Pickett has also done high-profile studio work for Elton John, Katy Perry, and countless others. Here, backed by the 19-piece Finnish UMO Jazz Orchestra, Pickett goes into the same territory as SNL’s band at times. He digs deep into classic R&B for tunes like the grooving “What Is Hip?” and the funky title track, which are an ideal setting for his signature upper-register altissmo (squealing) lines. But he’s more than a one-trick pony, with surging and nuanced work on “Kathy”; he plunges into the blues on “Busted Again.” Further out are the jittery “Alex Foster” (named after a fellow SNL band saxophonist), the playful Sun Ra–like polyphony on “A Sad State of Affairs,” and the hyperspeed swing of “The Big Wiggle.” He's been heard for years; now Pickett is celebrating in the spotlight.
