WEDNESDAY CAMPANELLA’s 2017 release SUPERMAN picks up where the band’s previous effort UMA left off: mingling truth and myth to bring an exhilaratingly outlandish J-pop charm to the dance floor. Wildly charismatic singer KOM_I typically catches listeners off guard, her vocals swapping a sugary, childlike naiveté for low-pitched, funky raps on tracks like “Ikkyu-san”, based on the legendary Zen Buddhist monk. Elsewhere, “Aladdin” is ushered in by overpoweringly rhythmic retro synths, proving that the trio’s animated, absurdist EDM-driven narratives lay only one ground rule: to let yourself go.
