A New Orleans Creole Christmas

A New Orleans Creole Christmas

It may not snow in New Orleans, but that doesn’t stop musicians from getting into the swing of the season by playing holiday standards. As a major player on the local scene as well as a global ambassador for the music of the Crescent City, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield stays in the jazz idiom here. He offers two bop versions (vocal and instrumental) of Vince Guaraldi’s “Christmas Time Is Here” and a soft version of Mel Tormé’s “The Christmas Song.” The opener aptly kicks things off brass band–style, while a slow blues arrangement of “Silent Night” also stands out.
