A Flash in the Night

A Flash in the Night

Smile opens with the pulsing, irresistible “Jeans Team,” with the bass thrumming and synths cracking like a New Order gem, calling listeners to the dance floor. It segues into the delightfully buoyant “Satellite Blues,” bursting with bubbly piano and sing-along optimism despite its title. Even if you don't know the band’s pedigree, it’s clear a good time is ahead. Smile is Björn Yttling (bass player and member of Peter Björn & John) and producer/artist Joakim Åhlund of the insanely fun Teddybears and the garage rock outfit Caesar (its song “Jerk It Out” sold a lot of iPods in the early '00s). A Flash in the Night is Smile's propulsive, addictive debut. Chugging motorik grooves push and pull the two other songs with vocals—the gliding “From Time to Time” and the sensational, muscular “Have Some Fun Tonight”—and you barely notice that the majority of the tracks are instrumentals. The pounding drums and throbbing current of “Clean Gloves” keep you on the dance floor; “Eating Dirt” is clattering, electroclash brawn. The vaporous synths and rollicking congas of “Second Hand Smoke” are worthy of both hip-shaking and cinematic pondering.
