Mabuta No Ura

Mabuta No Ura

This album from Japan’s experimental sludge-doom-drone rock band Boris is also known as “Sound Track From Film ‘Mabuta No Ura’.” The film does not exist but is the band’s idea of what the soundtrack for the film would be if it were real. There are several different versions of the album. This version is considered to be either the “Catune” or “Inoxia” version of the album that was released on June 29, 2005. It’s quite a subtle release, featuring little of the sonic crunch that’s made their name. In its place are pastoral touches (“Yesterday Morning”), smoldering percussion pieces (“Amber Bazaar”), plaintive guitar tracks (“Middle of Stairs,” “Slow Ripple of a Puddle”), angry ambient tone poems (“Theme”) and even acoustic-based work songs (“Smoke Sequence”). “Your Name” adds downcast chords. “It Touches” jams out a psychedelic riff.  But, overall, these placid, nearly normal, landscapes make it in many ways the weirdest album in their catalog.
