THE BOOK OF CLARENCE (The Motion Picture Soundtrack)

LaKeith Stanfield may be the star of The Book of Clarence, but the icons headlining the accompanying album threaten to steal the show. The soundtrack to the film about a man enthralled by the Messiah was executive-produced by JAY-Z and features the film’s director, Jeymes Samuel, leading the charge on the musical side as well. The funk- and rap-inspired collection features clever choices that pay instant dividends. Lil Wayne teams up with reggae heroes Buju Banton and Shabba Ranks for “Hallelujah Heaven,” and on “JEEZU,” which is credited to Samuel, Kodak Black, Doja Cat, and Adekunle Gold, Doja is positioned as Mary Magdalene and Kodak as the titular character. On the album’s centerpiece, “I Want You Forever,” Samuel teams up with JAY-Z and D’Angelo. The nine-and-a-half-minute track features the sultry neo-R&B D’Angelo helped make famous, and Hova comes through with a contemplative spoken-word performance.
