Act of Disappearing

Act of Disappearing

Classic songwriting gets a robust refresh on Winterbourne’s second proper album. Following their 2019 debut Echo of Youth and its 2020 all-acoustic version, the Central Coast duo of James Draper and Jordan Brady foreground close vocal harmonies and jaunty layers of electric and acoustic guitars on Act of Disappearing. These songs may be loosely inspired by an imaginary place called Angelo Fair and its resident pair of star-crossed lovers, but there’s no heavy lifting involved with that concept. These tunes invite us right in with sunny, upbeat airs and then deepen via multidimensional production and arrangements. There’s a Beatlesque devotion to meticulous melodies on display here, while some of the harmonizing evokes Crosby, Stills & Nash and the outwardly plucky yet subtly nuanced lyrics recall Paul Simon. More layers await from there: after Winterbourne kick off the album with the back-to-back snappiness of opener “Dandelions” and “Long Distance Runner,” the centerpiece “Paint, or The Act of Disappearing” introduces more psychedelic grandeur, thanks to lyrics about painting yourself a colorful jacket and sailing away to distant cathedrals. Warm and rich in tone, Act of Disappearing lives up to the transportive promise of its title.
