J. S. Bach: St John Passion

J. S. Bach: St John Passion

Lars Ulrik Mortensen’s vision of the St John Passion, brought to life by a vocal ensemble of eight singers and a small band of top-flight period-instrument performers, invites listeners to consider humankind’s flawed nature and face the heavy questions that arise from it. He creates ideal conditions for the contemplative qualities of Bach’s arias to bloom, unforced by seductive gestures or overblown operatic mannerisms. The drama of Christ’s betrayal, trial, and crucifixion prepares the ground here for a profoundly moving, intimate expression of remorse and humility, channeled with telling restraint by tenor soloist Nicholas Mulroy in “Erwäge, wie sein blutgefärbter Rücken” (Track 20) and heart-melting conviction by soprano Joanne Lunn in “Zerfließe, mein Herz” (Track 35). This St John Passion combines the inner stillness of prayer with the burning clarity of an unforgettable sermon.
