On The Wall In The Morning Light

On The Wall In The Morning Light

The recording sessions for Great Gable’s follow-up to their 2020 debut, Tracing Faces, sound idyllic. For a month the Perth quartet lived on the site of Rainbow Valley Studios, located on co-producer Matt Corby’s northern New South Wales property. Along with co-producer Alex Henriksson, it was there they whittled down the 30 songs they’d written to a tight 12. With lush guitars pushed to the fore and breezy indie melodies sweeping across the album, the picturesque environs clearly agreed with the four-piece. Not that On the Wall in the Morning Light is a laidback affair—opener “Dancing Shoes” (in which vocalist Alex Whiteman explores the theme of taking chances) is as sprightly as its name suggests, while “Hazy” charges along on a wall of fuzz guitars and a solid four-on-the-floor backbeat. The reggae-inflected “Another Day” sees Whiteman ruminating on chasing gratification from others instead of finding peace within, while the simple pleasure of the morning sun shining through the bedroom window on the one you love inspired the solid indie pop of “Our Love.” As smooth and harmonious as the location in which it was recorded.
