Ravel: Concertos pour piano - Mélodies

Ravel: Concertos pour piano - Mélodies

Playing an 1892 Pleyel “Grand Patron” piano, Cédric Tiberghien takes us back to another age with this terrific album of music by Ravel. In the two piano concertos, the more tightly focused piano tone with its slight “ping”—when combined with the period instruments of François-Xavier Roth’s magnificent orchestra, Les Siècles—is a revelation. Lacking the brashness of modern instruments, there’s a lovely glow to the music: the jazzy Piano Concerto in G Major shimmers and sparkles, while the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D Major blossoms before the ears to scintillating effect. Tiberghien is joined in the songs by the superbly characterful, and utterly idiomatic, baritone Stéphane Degout. A triumph and a real musical milestone.
