The title of powfu’s second EP of 2021 is pretty funny—after all, Vancouver’s resident emo-rap romantic is always game to tell you exactly how he feels. The five tracks here hew closely to powfu’s now signature style of chill late-night beats, sad-sack confessions, and pop-punk-inspired songcraft, but tell me your feelings and I won’t tell you mine continues to build upon the three-dimensional productions and misery-loves-company ethos of the preceding drinking under the streetlights EP. Amid the wintry fantasia of “snowflake,” powfu’s slack chorus is complemented by rapid-fire rhymes from Jaden Smith, while “tinted green” weaves sampled string arrangements into a slow-motion psychedelic funk spiked with hazy flows from fellow DIY rapper Jomie. But even in the absence of guest features, powfu can still summon a communal spirit: “a castle by the sea” may be a solo acoustic performance, but its overlapping, double-tracked hooks will make you feel like you’re listening to two different Warped Tour anthems playing at once.
